50th anniversary of our sisters in Paranatinga
Paranatinga is located in the intereor of Mato Grosso Brazil, a secluded spot, a sparsely populated area with some huts, in the midst of the Bush steppe. The sisters: Teodora Krause, Anete Pedó and Julita Kuhsler from Southern Brazil, came to this area on February 18, 1967. They thus fulfilled a request made by Pastor P. José Cont, who wanted religious nuns to work with the people. Bravely, they began their work in the field of health, education and in other tasks. These three pioneers were followed by many other sisters, who wanted to dedicate part of their life to this Mission. The current Community consists of: Sr. Delfina Mueller,
Sr. Teresinha Scheuer and Sr. Iris Barbosa de Oliveira.
Now the time had come to celebrate 50 years of devoted service since the first sisters had sown the seeds. The present parish priest Fr. Lidiomar dos Santos motivated the parishioners and the community leaders to surprise the Sisters of Divine Providence with a beautiful anniversary celebration. This celebration was held on Pentecost (the 4th June 2017) with Bishop Derek John Christopher Byrne, priests, candidates to the priesthood, sisters from different congregations and many other members of the community.
Sister Ursula Kuhlmann and Sr. Maria Rita Xavier Mendes from the General Coordination attended the celebration because they carried out the visitation with our sisters in Paranatinga. A Minibus from Cuiabá brought many sisters and Laity-members of Divine Providence to the celebration as well, including Sr. Hedwiges Schaeffer, who had worked in the health centre of Paranatinga for 25 years.
During the ceremony the sisters were honoured several times by the Parish and the City as a sign of recognition and gratitude for their work and their tireless efforts in the course of these 50 years:
- The Community Coordinator, Sr. Delfina Mueller, was presented with a small plaque in which words of thanks were engraved, by the Parish Priest.
- Bishop Derek presented Sr. Ursula Kuhlmann - on behalf of all sisters of the Congregation - a small plaque with a certificate;
- Father P. Lidiomar presented Sr. Mara Buttini, Provincial Coordinator, a sign of honour on behalf of the City of Paranatinga.
A very touching moment happened when a message from Sr. Anete, one of the three first sisters, who at present lives in Florianópolis because of health reasons, was read. Her niece, Nilce, who currently lives in Paranatinga, read Sr. Anetes’ letter. It was followed by a great applause as a reward for Sister Anetes long commitment in the field of education and other activities.
After the Eucharistic celebration a delicious Dinner was offered.
Praise and thanks to the living and loving God!
Sr. Mara Buttini
