Semarang floods: Call for concrete action amid pandemic
The floods that have hit Semarang on 6 February 2021 have alarmed us and prompted us to act. This movement began with a simple conversation in the dining room of the community in Griya Paseban. "What can we do for the people who are suffering from the floods?" was the question of Sr. Hilda. This question was answered positively and enthusiastically by all members, thinking of both the different possibilities and the risks. The pandemic is not over and the victims are still very weak. At the same time, people in various places in Semarang seemed to be "paralyzed" by the floods.
The enthusiasm and the small fire began to burn even more when we said "yes" to the action. This action was carried out with the support of Sr. Klarista, Provincial Superior of the Indonesian Province, and the Sisters of the Communities. The creation of a simple poster, which was circulated on social networks, touched the hearts of the donors, who donated part of their livelihoods to this humanitarian campaign in a responsible and voluntary manner.
The funds collected were initially used to prepare about 300 portions of rice. Another thing that is our strength in this action, is the participation of many people to share the love, including "Semarang Interfaith Forum" (PELITA), Banser and parishioners and the participation of the staff of the house Griya Paseban. Instantaneously, the Spirit breaks the boundaries between faith and conviction, which may well be intertwined. Cross-border cooperation seems to be an ark that leads us to find others who are suffering. Every day we gathered at the Ahmadiyah Mosque in Semarang Jl. Erlangga and drove to the flood area. To get to the houses of the residents, we had to take a speedboat. In the following days we distributed not only portions of rice, but also other supplies, medicines, milk, mineral water and fruit.
We are grateful that today we are actively involved in the message of God. We interpret this experience as another effort to realize the vision of the Province, Mary, “Star of the Sea" in Indonesia: God's Providence is creative, it enables us to walk with joy, to cross borders, to embrace threatened life. As young religious women, we are grateful and proud because, in the midst of this pandemic, we are invited to walk out of our comfort zone and fear. We are also invited to take over the creative work of God as witnesses of Divine Providence, and to adhere to the health protocols. "It is better to light a lamp than to curse the darkness."
